Seattle Neighborhood: Ballard

This historic neighborhood founded by Scandinavian fisherman and mill workers takes pride in its Scandinavian roots. The annual Norwegian Constitution Day Parade, the Nordic Heritage Museum, and the Bergen Place mural all reflect that pride. Ballard is also home to the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, which connects Lake Washington to Puget Sound.

The Locks, along with its fish ladder and beautiful Carl S. English Botanical Garden and Visitor Center are a popular destination. There is a sense of rejuvenation in downtown Ballard.

Many older buildings are being restored, businesses are opening, and condo projects are under construction. A new library featuring "green" construction recently opened. The Ballard Art Walk, held the second Saturday of each month, showcases local artisans. Ballard's lively nightlife draws music fans to local establishments like the Tractor Tavern and the Conor Byrne Pub.

Median Prices: Homes $368,250; Condos $266,325.
