• Start with positive referrals from friends and relatives.
• Once you have found a lender you feel comfortable with, check their references. The Washington State Department of Financial Institutions, the local area Chamber of Commerce, and the Better Business Bureau, the National and State Association of Mortgage Brokers, and the Washington State Association of Mortgage Brokers are all great resources.

Ask the lender specific questions:

• How long has the company been in business?
• How long has the loan representative been in business?
• Ask for references.
• How do they protect personal information?
